Area Travel Guide

Ten minutes south of Plaza Pelicanos is the center of town. Viejo Vallarta, or Old Town, is reminiscent of a marvelous fishing village – cobblestone streets stretch throughout the city, and whitewashed houses with tiled rooftops speak to motifs of Old Mexico. Many homes here have been converted to shops, galleries and restaurants. Isla Rio Cuale, a narrow island of Vallarta real estate accessible by bridge, features a cultural center, a museum, and more restaurants and shops.

Las Glorias Beach
In front of the Plaza Pelicanos
One of the cleanest and least-crowded beaches in the town of Puerto Vallarta. Also enjoy hiking or running the 3-mile stretch of beach, known as the malecon, which includes Playas Camarones, Las Glorias, Los Tules and de Oro. The malecon also enjoys the best sunsets in town.

Los Arcos Amphitheater
Near Presidencia Municipal (City Hall)
Free music and dance concerts happen on most weekends and some weekday nights, sponsored by the city. After the concert, enjoy the mimes and street artists, or experience local flavor at a street side food or juice vendor. For a calendar of concert events, see the local tourist newspaper, Vallarta Today.

Muelle Nuevo (New Pier)
South of Rio Cuale
A perfect place to enjoy the evening breeze. People watch, or use a net or drop line to catch a fish or two.

Sail Vallarta
Bay of Banderas
Enjoy group sailing excursions in and around the Bay of Banderas.

Golf
Some of Mexico's finest courses can be found in Puerto Vallarta.

Jet Skis, Parasailing and Waterskiing
These water sports are available in front of many of the resorts along Las Glorias beach.

Mountain Biking
Mountain Biking Scenic mountain bike adventures are available for riders of all levels. More advanced trips into the outback include the Yelapa and Sayulita, and mountain destinations like San Sebastian, Mascota and Talpa. In most cases, 27-gear bikes, helmets, gloves, water and a bilingual guide will be provided.

Horseback Riding
Enjoy horseback riding into nearby tropical forests, on rides suited for all skill levels and ranging from two hours to all day.

Eco Tourism
Eco adventures consist of either boat tours to the Islas Marietas wildlife sanctuary (sea turtles, dolphins, mantas, whales, seabirds) or plane excursions and off-road exploring (canyons, mountains, crystal streams, rustic villages).

Tropical Forest Expeditions
Try Puerto Vallarta's jungle canopy adventure – ride at treetop heights like a bird through the tropical forest.

Shopping - Along the Mercado Municipal and Vallarta Viejo
Attractive Mexican handicrafts are available most days in this shopping district near Rio Cuale.

Shopping - Downtown
A number of Puerto Vallarta's best boutiques and arts and crafts stores lie along the six square blocks of Avenue Juarez, beginning at the Rio Cuale.
